Vancouver – Victoria – West Coast Trail – Nanaimo
Continuing good times in Vancouver. We had a party on Nick’s boat with Leah and Nick’s friends which was really fun, especially being picked up on a dock right in downtown Vancouver („Oh, there’s my friend with the snazzy speed boat“). Then I moved to Leah’s place and Joe Watts-Roe Botts came up from Portland. We had a great weekend with visits to the Vag (Vancouver Art Gallery) and hanging out on the beach.
Last Sunday it was Goodbye to all Vancouverites and I hopped on the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island. I slept one night there at Luke&Steph’s place and on Monday the big bad West Coast Trail began. It was rough and tough! My pack was incredibly heavy, maybe due to the fact that, besides all the necessaries like tent, stove etc., I was also carrying various Cds and a Mordecai Richler hardcover. The hike was amazing though. I can’t express the beauty of the rainforest and the beaches I was walking for six days. Whales were spraying just off the beach, bald eagles were circling above and the last evening a black bear was checking out our camp (but left with no harm done). I had great weather, i.e. no rain until Friday night when it started to pour and didn’t stop until I exited the trail on Saturday around noon. Everything (and I mean everything) was drenched. I met great people along the way, including Brian and Rob, two teachers from Yukon/Vancouver that I walked with the last two days. When we were hanging out on the fire Thursday night (every Canadian seems to bring scotch or rum on this trip) they got trapped by the incoming flood and couldn’t go back to their tent. A couple of tents nearby simply got washed away by the oncoming waves. Luckily I was spared (after moving my tent in a hurry three times) and around 4:30 in the morning Brian and Rob could return to their tent and go to sleep. I found an eagle feather and something amazing called a Japanese fishing net ball, which I’ll tell you about later.
On the boat from the northern trailhead to Port Alberni on Saturday I met a group that had also just finished the trail and they took me to Nanaimo, where I’m staying in a hostel now until I venture north to Juneau tomorrow (I’ll arrive on Friday).
